Kim Brewbaker, 46 w/ Radiation Mask
Mucoepidermal Carcinoma (Salivary Gland Cancer)
"They said, "See this piece of plastic? We are going to heat it up, so it becomes pliable and then we are going to place it over your face and neck." I was imagining a veil, but once the plastic stretches out far enough, it hardens and you can't move. It was very frightening. There's quite a difference between expecting to be under a veil and actually being strapped down, restrained at the face and neck while they shoot radiation at you." - Kim Brewbaker

ABOUT
Cancer - a growth caused by the division of abnormal cells.
The World Health Organization states that 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime

There is nothing abnormal about living with cancer.

Abnormal is a unique combination of Cancer Research fundraising and a public awareness campaign about the benefits of early screenings and prevention.

Abnormal's goal is to partner with a research hospital and build a fundraising campaign around the stories of their patients. Utilizing the immediacy of photography, and the equipment already on hand, we can focus the public's attention.

What makes Abnormal different from other fundraising campaigns is the approach. We combine a a patient's portrait with a microscopic image of their cancerous cells, and use their own words to share their experiences with cancer.
1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer during their life, but due to the personal nature of illness, few people talk about the way it affects them. Even fewer know what a cancerous cell looks like. We hope our project will create a opening to talk about these issues.
